Concordia Parish Library announces its exciting list of special events for Summer Reading 2019 with the theme “A Universe of Stories”!
Summer Reading Programs dates are from June 3, to July 19, and will take place at four locations throughout the parish -- Ferriday, Vidalia, Clayton, and Monterey.
There will be programs for Preschool (Pre-K-K), Elementary (1st-5), and Teens (6th grade and up). The Preschool programs will be at 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the Vidalia Library and every Thursday in the Ferriday Library.
The Elementary programs will take place at 10:15 a.m. on the following weekdays: Mondays at Concordia Bank in Monterey, Tuesdays at the Vidalia Library, Thursdays at the Ferriday Library, and Fridays at the Clayton Library. The Teen Programs will be hosted at 11:15 a.m. on the following weekdays: Tuesdays at the Vidalia Library and Thursdays at the Ferriday Library.
The Summer Reading Programs will be filled with fun activities, sharing great stories about space, planets and astronauts by well-known authors, puzzle sheets and brain teasers, take-home crafts, media presentations and galactic snacks.
Concordia Bank, Comfort Suites and Concordia Parish Library will provide special performances each week with six special guests to entertain children throughout the summer. These special guests are artists whose work is designed specifically for children’s programming.  All programs are free and open to the public for summer fun and learning.
Our first special guest will be storyteller, Sylvia Davis performing Thursday, June 6th at the Ferriday Library at 10:15 a.m. and the Vidalia Library at 2 p.m. Sylvia is a retired teacher and principal from Rapides Parish who has performed for groups for over 20 years.
On Tuesday, June 11th, Concordia Parish Library will welcome musician Elizabeth “Lady Chops” Vidos with performances at the Vidalia Library at 10:15 a.m. and the Ferriday Library at 2:00 p.m. Vidos, also known as Lady Chops, is a one woman drumming show with lots of energy playing many different instruments including buckets, body percussion and the Cajun rubboard. Her past work includes performing in the hit show on Broadway "Stomp."                                
Corean Gonzales will showcase her juggling and hula hoop talents on Tuesday, June 18th. She will entertain at Vidalia Library at 10:15 a.m. and at the Ferriday Library at 2 p.m. Hula Hoop Fanatic Gonzales is a professional circus performer who has traveled and performed in several states. She has performed for NCAA Basketball half-time shows, theme parks, corporate functions and more.  She takes hula hooping to the next level with her unique multi hula-hooping skills of up to six hoops at one time! She is even a skilled juggler.
Mitch Richard will perform his magic on Thursday, June 27th at the Ferriday Library at 10:15 a.m. and the Vidalia Library at 2 p.m. His experience of 19 years as a magician, comedian, and balloon artist to the masses will delight kids of all ages. 
Herpetologist Terry Vandeventer, “The Snake Man,” as he is affectionately known by his fans, will perform on Thursday, July 11th be at the Ferriday Library at 10:15 a.m. and the Vidalia Library at 2:00 p.m. Vandeventer is an international expert on reptiles who has 31 years of experience and formerly was in charge of the Jackson Zoo Reptile Department and now serves as Herpetology Field Associate with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.
Musicians Brian and & Terri Kinder will perform Thursday, July 18th at the Ferriday Library at 10:15 a.m. and the Vidalia Library at 2 p.m.  Combining guitar and banjo playing talent and whimsical song writing skills, the Kinders amuse and entertain children of all ages. 
Adding to the schedule of Summer activities will be Alethia Lawrence, Area Assistant Nutrition LSU Ag Agent with special programs on the following dates: Monday, July 1st at 10:15 a.m. at Concordia Bank in Monterey, Tuesday, July 2nd at 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and 11:15 a.m. at the Vidalia Library, and Friday, July 5th at the Clayton Library at 10:15 a.m.
Special programs are planned for adults and families. On Thursday, July 25th at 7 p.m. at the Concordia Bank & Trust Co. in Vidalia, Kim Dewitt will pay tribute to Patsy Cline. Rod Payne and Carvel Avis will accompany her as we take a walk down memory lane as we hear country favorites from a country great performed by a talented artist.
Scholar Georgiann Potts will discuss “Neil Armstrong: One Man’s Step Into History” on Thursday, August 1st at the Vidalia Library at 6 p.m.  She will share how man has always looked to the heavens in wonder since time began and how one man’s life and experience led to the most important moment in history for human kind to date. Delta Bank will co-sponsor this fascinating evening discussion.
