Friday, Dec. 6, is the last day to contribute to Operation Grits for Soldiers.

Last year, more than 500 boxes containing canned items, condiments, microwavable food, powdered drinks, snacking food and toiletries were sent to Afghanistan.

Three years ago, 325 boxes were sent overseas, while two years ago more than 700 boxes were sent to the local 1086th National Guard unit.

Organizer Pattie Reed Jones said she hopes to have the boxes sent off no later than the end of November so they will have plenty of time to reach the soldiers by Christmas.

This year packages will be sent to units that include PFC Jarred Brown of Vidalia, SSGT Joshua Peterson of Natchez, SSG Joseph Ernest Hestle of St. Joseph and SFC Marcus Lance of Newellton.

Morris said the packages can also include Bibles.

It costs $14.85 to ship one box for each individual soldier.

Business, churches, schools and the City of Vidalia donated boxed items last year.

Boxes can be obtained at Reed Insurance in Ferriday and Vidalia and the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce office.

Contact Jones at 601-807-6470 or Jamie Wiley at 318-336-8223 for more information.

There is also a Facebook page set up for Operation Grits.
