Vidalia’s Dylan LaPrairie and Nick Melton along with Oak Grove’s Bryant Russel put on a pitching clinic as the Vikings fell to the Tigers 1-0 in Oak Grove Friday.
Oak Grove managed five hits in the contest, while C.J. Chatman and Adam Eames had Vidalia’s only hits.
“That game only took an hour and 25 minutes,” said Vidalia head coach Mike Norris. “”We hit some balls hard right at them, and they hit some balls hard right at us.”
John Ramsey Morgan hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth for the only run of the game.
“It was basically a pop-up that just carried out of the park,” Norris said. “It would have been a flyout in our park.”
LaPrairie pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking four. Melton allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Duece Clement doubled and singled twice for Oak Grove.
Morgan helped his own cause with two singles.
Vidalia’s home game with Peabody on Saturday was rained out.
The Vikings are sitting at No. 17 in Class 2A power rankings.
“We’ve got to get in six district games over the next two weeks,” Norris said. “I think if we can win four or five, we’ll get that first playoff game at home.”
Winnfield is sitting at No. 1 i Class 2A. The Vikings lost to the Tigers 4-2 in Vidalia last month.
“We can play with anybody in our class,” Norris said. “We just have to go out and play.”
