Vidalia Garden Club members, along with guests, recently celebrated the organization’s 85 years of horticulture interests and education, as well as its service to the community.
Highlighting the Oct. 12th evening event at the Comfort Suites hotel was a display of the club’s memorabilia spanning the years since its founding by charter members Mmes. F.J. Bingham, L.L. Cargile, H.D. Matthews, C.P. Peak, Charles Saxe, S.L. Winston and Ms. Nellie Torrey.
President Cindy Galloway welcomed guests, including Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc., State President Lena Bateman of Ferriday and Vidalia Mayor and Mrs. Buz Craft.
Current VGC officers attending along with Galloway were Vice President Laurie Skates, Treasurer Sharon Woods, Recording Secretary Bunny Barlow, Corresponding Secretary Mary Knapp and Parliamentarian Monelle Moseley.
Among the garden club’s current community projects are planting of the garden area in front of the Vidalia Post Office, planting the garden surrounding the city fountain near the foot of the Mississippi River Bridge, awarding of an annual college scholarship to a deserving Concordia Parish graduate planning to major in a horticulture-related field, and annual holiday donations to the Guardian Shelter.
Also, each Arbor Day, club members select a public location within the city to plant a tree. This past Arbor Day, a cypress tree was planted alongside the pond at the city’s Dr. William T. Polk City Park next to the Vidalia Municipal Complex.
