Lady Cougars come up short in championship run

The Franklin Academy Lady Cougars ended a stellar season second place in the MAIS Class A Fast Pitch Softball state championship tournament.

The Lady Cougars fell to a solid Briarfield Academy team in a best of three series for the state championship crown.

In the first game, the Lady Cougars lost a heartbreaker in extra innings, 5-3.

The game was tied at three with Briarfield Academy batting in the top of the seventh when an error scored two runs for the Lake Providence team.

In the first inning, Briarfield Academy got their offense started when Abigail Payne doubled on the first pitch of the bat, scoring one run in front of a packed Davis Park field in Winnsboro.

FA put up three runs in the second inning and held that score for the majority of the game. The big inning was thanks to an error on a ball put in play by Macie Wall and Shelby Dickerson.

Anne Elise Sartin started the game for FA. She went seven innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits, striking out two and walking one.

Ally Roberts, Dickerson and Hallie Herron each managed one hit to lead FA.

Big hit of the game:

Big hit of the game goes to Dickerson. In the fifth inning, Dickerson smoked a line drive to center / right field that hit the fence for a double.

Defensive play of the game:

Defensive play of the game also goes to Dickerson. Dickerson made a diving catch at shortstop and threw a laser to the catcher to get an out at home.

Briarfield Academy 12 -

With a loss in Winnsboro, the Lady Cougars had to travel to Lake Providence to play Briarfield on their home field.

FA fell behind early and could not come back in a 12-2 loss.

Briarfield scored on a triple by Lillie Kate Thornton and a single by Madelyn Taylor in the first inning.

FA opened up scoring in the first inning, when Ashlyn Rodgers grounded out, scoring one run.

Sartin was in the circle for FA. She went three and a third innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Madison Truelove threw two innings out of the bullpen.

Natalie Roberts, Macie Wall and Shelby Dickerson all had one hit to lead FA offensively.
