Uber is legal in Louisiana

Über was is open for business as of Wednesday.

Act 286 from this year’s session, which went into effect this week, grants transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft the ability to operate without a permit until rules and regulations are promulgated by the Department of Transportation and Development, the state’s regulator.

DOTD created a conditional permit to allow companies to launch immediately while also providing assurance the basic requirements of the statute are being met, the department says.

DOTD says it is also working with municipalities regarding TNC operations during special events such as this weekend’s ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans.

Before Act 286 was signed into law, local governments in Louisiana  regulated transportation network companies, which operated only in a handful of larger parishes.
