Jonathan Armstrong, 32 of 309 Carter St., Winnsboro, was charged with two counts of attempted murder after allegedly setting fire to a family home where his bedridden mother and disabled grandfather resided.

On the morning of June 8, Winnsboro Fire Department officials responded to a house fire located in the 300 block of Carter Street and reported seeing smoke coming from the home as they arrived. The fire, located in the bedroom, was extinguished without any injuries.

Armstrong was arguing with his mother and grandfather through the night which led to him being asked to leave the home, according to a Louisiana State Fire Marshal statement. The mother called 911 after Armstrong refused to leave.

Armstrong provided contradictory information to the evidence discovered at the scene, according to Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s statements. He was placed under arrest and booked into Franklin Parish Detention Center with additional counts of aggravated arson and remaining after forbidden.

“He said cigarette ashes were dumped over and walked off,” said Winnsboro Fire Department Chief Orlando Logan.

Winnsboro Police Department also helped in the investigation.

Armstrong is being held on a $500,000 bond for aggravated arson and a $500 bond for remaining on premises after forbidden.
