Franklin Parish will host Tioga Friday in a scrimmage beginning at 6 p.m.

“Our main goal is to stay healthy and get a look at a lot of first-time starters,” said Franklin Parish head coach Whitney McCartney.

McCartney said Franklin Parish and Tioga’s eighth-grade teams will begin the scrimmage at 6 p.m.

“They are going to go eight plays offense and defense and then we will repeat the process for about an hour,” McCartney said.

Tioga and Franklin Parish’s junior varsity squads will battle on the other end of the field beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“It will be a somewhat similar format,” McCartney said.

Franklin Parish and Tioga’s varsity teams will hold a controlled scrimmage for about an hour before the two teams will compete with a 20-minute close in game-type situations.

“No coaches will be on the field,” McCartney said. “We want to make sure we can get the plays in from the sidelines to the huddle.”

With the loss of 23 seniors from last year’s team, the Patriots have a number of new starters.

“We’re teaching them how to mentally prepare for a game,” McCartney said. “The big difference now is that just a few years ago you would have radios and headphones playing,” McCartney said. “Now you have cell phones and you don’t know what they are listening to or who they are talking to and they may have no idea what’s going on. We go over how we enter the stadium, how we stretch for pre-game and how we stand for the National Anthem.”

McCartney said Tioga will be a big test for the Patriots.

“Their offense is really good and they have a defensive tackle being widely recruited,” McCartney said. “It’s a challenge, but we know our kids will play hard.”
