Winnsboro 11/12 boys place second in district

The 11/12 year old Winnsboro All Stars will play in the state tournament at Morgan City Friday after placing second in their district last weekend.

The district tournament was highlighted by close games for the Winnsboro All Stars.

In the first game, Winnsboro came away victorious with a 3-2 win over neighboring parish Caldwell. Fireworks were on tap for the second game as Winnsboro beat Mangham with a walk off single by Garrett Hunt.

West Carroll beat Winnsboro in a close matchup in the third game 7-6, but Winnsboro bounced back in a big way against Delhi. The Franklin Parish all star team beat Delhi 16-3.

Winnsboro would face West Carroll again in the championship game with West Carroll coming out on top 7-0.

Winnsboro 3 - Caldwell 2

Winnsboro scored quickly against Caldwell putting two points on the board in the first inning.

Leadoff batter Laken Bradley was hit by a pitch and would be the first to score after Hunt singled in the first. Hunt would score later in the inning after Ryland Thomas singled.

In the third inning, Kaden Liles would steal second and third and score after Bradley hit a sac fly.

Hunt was starting pitcher for Winnsboro in the matchup. He pitched four innings. Thomas and Bradley pitched in relief.

Winnsboro 8 - Mangham 7

Winnsboro gave the fans something to cheer about as they beat their northern neighbors 8-7 after a walk off single by Hunt.

Mangham used a big five-score second inning to pull ahead of Winnsboro 7-1, but Winnsboro would hold them for the rest of the contest.

The 11/12 year old team chipped away at the lead in the fourth inning as Luke Nichols and Owen McDonald scored. In the fifth inning, Winnsboro’s bats and base runners would wake up and tally four points. Bradley would reach base first in the inning with a walk. Caden Gallagher would move Bradley with a single. Next batter, Hunt, would be walked. Thomas would then clean the bases as he ripped a home run for Winnsboro and tied the score.

In the sixth inning, Tanner Tarver, Bradley and Gallagher would get on base. With his teammates on the bases, Garrett stroked a single on the first pitch to score Tarver and win the game.

L.J. Johnson was the starting pitcher for Winnsboro against Mangham. Nichols and Bradley pitched in relief.

In the contest, Nichols hit a single and a double for his team.

Bradley, Gallagher and Tarver contributed with singles in the matchup.

West Carroll 7 -

Winnsboro 6

In the third game, Winnsboro faced eventual district champion West Carroll. Winnsboro fell to West Carroll 7-6.

West Carroll scored four in the second and three in the fifth while Winnsboro would score two points in the fourth, one point in the fifth and two points in the sixth in a hard fought comeback. Winnsboro’s first score came in the second inning.

Nichols hit a double in the fourth inning that would score Gallagher and Hunt. Gallagher hit a single earlier in the inning while Hunt drew a walk. Hunt would hit a single in the fifth inning that scored Gallagher.

Tripp Reeves and Tarver contributed with a single in sixth inning that scored Nichols and McDonald.

Thomas was starting pitcher for Winnsboro with Hunt pitching in relief.

Winnsboro 16 - Delhi 3

Winnsboro bounced back in a big way beating Delhi 16-3.

The all star team scored seven points in the first and never looked back as they scored three in the second and six insurance runs in the third.

Bradley started the offensive deluge with a home run in the leadoff position. He would later hit a single and score in the third inning.

Tarver scored each time in the contest and hit a double and two singles for Winnsboro.

Hunt hit two doubles and scored twice against Delhi.

Nichols hit a double and a single and scored in the first inning while Reeves hit a single and scored in the third.

Kaden Liles hit two singles and scored twice in the contest, and McDonald hit a single and scored in the first and third.

Thomas, Gallagher and Laylen Blackmon would round out scoring for Winnsboro.

Nichols was the starting pitcher for Winnsboro. Johnson and McDonald pitched in relief.

West Carroll 7 -

Winnsboro 0

In the championship game, Winnsboro faced the only team it lost to - West Carroll.

West Carroll scored three in the third, three in the fifth and two in the six to beat Winnsboro 7-0.

Starting pitcher for Winnsboro was Hunt with Bradley pitching relief.
