The Louisiana Tech (LA Tech) Bulldogs (26-8, 15-3 C-USA) knocked off the Central Michigan Chippewas (23-9, 12-6 MAC) 89-79 in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) at LA Tech's Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston on Tuesday, March 17.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 12 point halftime lead by halftime. Central Michigan outscored LA Tech 46 to 44 in the second half, but the Bulldogs' lead was too much to overcome.
LA Tech had three players hit double figures in scoring with Raheem Appleby leading the Bulldogs with 22 points while Jacobi Boykins came off the bench to score 18 points for LA Tech. Michael Kyser was the other player for LA Tech who scored double figures with 10 points.
Central Michigan was led by Chris Fowler, who scored 21 points for the Chippewas, while Rayson Braylon added 20 points for Central Michigan in the loss. Rayshawn Simmons was the other Chippewa to hit double figures in scoring with 18 points.
LA Tech's win is the 30th straight victory for the Bulldogs at Thomas Assembly Center.
LA Tech will meet the winner of number eight seeded Montana Grizzles at number two seeded Texas A&M Aggies in the second round of the NIT.
