Monroe Police officers arrested a Monroe man on three counts of assault on a school teacher last week after he pulled into the drop-off area at Lexington Elementary School and pointed a toy gun at school staff.
According to the police report, police arrested Edward H. Cheek Jr., 72, of 405 Orleans St., Monroe, after he attempted to pull off what he described as an “April Fools” joke. As Cheek approached three teachers in his vehicle, he pointed a toy gun at them and said, “Bang, bang, April Fools,” according to the April 1 arrest report.
The three teachers told authorities they initially believed the gun was real and felt threatened. Later, they realized it was only a toy gun.
During questioning, Cheek admitted to pointing an orange water pistol at the teachers. He defended the act as an April Fools joke. The arrest report indicated Cheek was required to surrender the water pistol to police.
He was booked at Ouachita Correctional Center.
