A 3-year-old West Sterlington child mauled by neighborhood dogs last week was reported in stable condition Monday at Ochsner-LSU Health Center in Shreveport.

Walter James Fuller Jr. of 161 Walker Rd., Sterlington, was airlifted to the Shreveport hospital on June 28 by Pafford Emergency Services after being found near a shed next to his residence, Union Parish Sheriff Dusty Gates said.

Sheriff’s investigators reported that the mother of the child had been taking a nap and when she awakened, she discovered the child missing and started searching for him. There were two other children, ages 5 and 6, that were reportedly inside the Walker Road residence.

The 3-year-old was found next to a shed in the yard with his clothes ripped off and a number of bites on his body, Gates said.

The sheriff said it is believed that three neighborhood dogs, two pit bull mixex and one Shepherd mix, may have been responsible for the attack. The dogs have been quarantined for at least 10 days while the investigation is continuing, Gates said.

Gates said Child Protective Services personnel were notified.

In the US a pit bull kills a person an average of once every 13 days. They are weapons that can pull their own trigger.
