Donald Batey Beach

Memorial services celebrating the life of Donald Batey Beach, 80, of Monroe, will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018, at North Monroe Baptist Church, West Worship Center, 210 Finks Hideaway Road, Monroe, with Dr. Bill Dye and Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holly Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 5100 LA Hwy. 562, 4.7 miles west of Wisner. Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.

Donald Batey Beach was born Oct. 11, 1938, in Wisner, and died peacefully at his home in Monroe, on Nov. 17, 2018. His parents were Howard and Letha Beach of Ft. Necessity. His only sibling was his brother, Pat Beach. His grandparents were Frank and “Tib” Beach and M.C. and Anna Batey of Holly Grove. He leaves behind many beloved Beach and Batey cousins and an uncle, Dallas Batey.

Don married Fran Elarton in 1962 and they were happily married for 56 years. His children are Lauren Wagner and her husband Randy Wagner of Tulsa, Okla., and Karen Hurst and her husband Erich Hurst of Houston, Texas. Grandchildren are David, Hannah, and Peter Hurst.

Don earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from LSU in 1961, and with the help of many talented, dedicated, and loyal partners and employees, he founded and operated three successful businesses which continue in Monroe to this day: Steel Fabricators, Construction Bolts, and Ranger Erectors. As dear to him as family were the many employees of those businesses, especially his longtime business partners, John Hunter and Jane Brown.

Don and Fran joined North Monroe Baptist Church in 1966 and Don was ordained as a deacon in 1973. He served in many ways, especially in leadership of the construction, finance and maintenance committees.

Don was an active member of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce which awarded him the Kitty DeGree Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. He served on the ULM Foundation Board of Trustees and was a longtime supporter of the ULM School of Construction Management. The School honored him with its Constructor of the Year Award in 2015.

Don is remembered for his dry sense of humor, his integrity, his fearlessness, and his relentless pursuit of excellence. His greatest strength was in hiring talented, hardworking people and giving them opportunities to grow. He loved his family, his church, his employees, and his community, and he worked hard every day to fulfill his duty to take care of all of them. He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the ULM Foundation/School of Construction Management, 700 University Avenue, Monroe, LA 71203; or North Monroe Baptist Church Building Fund, 210 Finks Hideaway Road, Monroe, LA 71203.
