Completing an undefeated march through the 7-8 year-old Little League State Tournament, Sterlington crushed Moss Bluff 17-6 in the championship game Monday night at the Sterlington Sports Complex.
This marks Sterlington’s first state softball championship as a Little League program in any age group.
Sterlington reached the finals of the double elimination tournament with wins over Lake Charles (9-5), Bossier (26-6) and Moss Bluff (18-12).
Trailing 6-5 Monday night, Sterlington plated seven runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. Sterlington put the game out of reach with five more in the third to go up 17-6.
Hitting for Sterlington were Evie West with two doubles and a single, Lilly Price with a double and two singles, Lucy Claire Edwards with a triple and a double, Kaylee Eady with two doubles, Gracie Price, Landon Emory, Ansley Johnson, Kinsley Owens and Michael Ann Ross with two singles each and Kailee Moore with a base hit.
Playing outstanding defense for Sterlington were Elizabeth Bruscato and Aubrey Frost.
The State Tournament marks the end of the season for the Little League 7-8 year-old age group. However, coach Taylor Wilson said the team may compete in some upcoming travel tournaments.
