Bond for a Clayton man accused of killing his 10-month-old child was set at $1 million by Ad Hoc Judge Don Burns during proceedings Monday in Seventh Judicial District Court in Vidalia.

According to Concordia Parish Chief Deputy David Hedrick, on Nov. 15 CPSO investigators and deputies arrested Trashone D. Mayes, age 24, 204 Bingham Street, Clayton, initially charging him with attempted first-degree murder.

Charges were upgraded to 1st degree murder on Monday, Nov. 19.

CPSO lead Investigator Philip Smith said the infant boy had been left in the care of his father while the rest of the family was away at work and school on Wednesday, Nov. 14. When family members arrived home, they found the child to be unresponsive.

“The mother and two other family members took the child to Riverland Medical Center around noon last Wednesday,” Smith said. “The child was stabilized and then flown to Our Lady of the Lakes in Baton Rouge where he was placed on a ventilator due to the extent of the injuries.”

Smith said Mayes, the defendant, made statements while being questioned that “didn’t coincide with the extent of the injuries.”

Smith said he also spoke with caretakers of the child at the hospital in Baton Rouge concerning the extent of the injuries.

Photos were taken at the crime scene.

Based on the investigation, Smith said Mayes was initially charged with attempted first-degree murder.

“After learning Friday morning (Nov. 16) that the child had passed away we determined to upgrade the charges to 1st degree murder and did that this morning,” Smith said Monday.

“This is a tragic incident,” Chief Deputy Hedrick said. “Please keep the child’s family and loved ones in your prayers.”
