A polar vortex blasted cold weather throughout the Miss-Lou over the weekend keeping municipal employees working hard during the Christmas holidays.
Temperatures dropped below freezing Thursday and lasted through the weekend. Water expanded when it froze, bursting pipes that were not protected. Then when the temperature rose, broken pipes started leaking.
Some municipalities faired fine with no water leaks while others dealt with malfunctioning pumps.
On Tuesday, Clayton and Vidalia reported no issues with their utilities.
“I never got the first call for an outage, and we maintained good (water) pressure,” said Vidalia Mayor Buz Craft. “We did drop pressure a little Monday.”
Ridgecrest, on the other hand, is under a boil water notice since 4 a.m. Tuesday due to a malfunctioning pump, according to Mayor Veller Ray Carroll.
The cause of the broken pump was due to cold weather.
Additionally, Ferriday was under a boil water notice, according to Matthew Parker, operations specialist for JCP Management, Inc.
Due to the hard freeze, customers running faucets and busted pipes throughout town, Ferriday experienced system pressure loss because of the extremely high demand.
