Back to conditioning for FP Patriots

Franklin Parish first-year head football coach Sonny Nason said his coaches will go back to conditioning and weight-lifting.

This action comes after Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Commissioner Eddie Bonine issued a statement last week high school football teams may be able to kick off their seasons on October 8. The October date will pit teams against their current third week opponent for a slightly abbreviated eight-game regular season.

“When September gets here we’ll ratchet it up,” Nason said. “But we’re not going five days a week right now, we’ll take Fridays off. They will get tired of us, and we’ll get tired of them.”

Bonine said there could be fewer playoff opponents, and teams could still potentially play championship games in New Orleans with a little maneuvering around bowl games and a New Orleans Saints home game around Christmas time.

Bonine also discussed the possibility of having a six-game schedule starting Oct. 8 that would keep championship dates in place that were already set for the Superdome in New Orleans.

Another meeting is scheduled for September when Bonine and other officials hope to have more answers for the upcoming season.

Nason said right now it appears that Franklin Parish will start the season October 8 at Richwood in Monroe, although he is open to hearing other options.

“I just hate losing those first two games at home,” he said.

Franklin Parish would open its home schedule October 15 against LaSalle.

“If we’re still in Phase Two at the end of August it’s going to be tough,” Nason said. “But at least right now we’ve got something to shoot for.”
