Davis Tennis Courts receive major improvements

Area tennis enthusiasts can enjoy resurfaced and relined courts, new wind screens, nets and refurbished lights at Davis Park Courts thanks to the cooperative endeavors of Franklin Parish Sheriff’s Office, School Board, Town of Winnsboro, Como Charitable Foundation Inc. and the hard work of Ann McIntyre.

During recent years, projects to revive the 30-year-old courts have taken place.

The previous lighting was replaced with LED bulbs two years ago with the help of Como Charitable Foundation Inc. and  Town of Winnsboro.

“The previous lights were a major problem,” McIntyre said. “The lighting was the first step in the improvements.”

New nets provided by the Sheriff’s office have been installed along with wind screens provided by the School Board.

The last major improvement was completed last week as crews from Australian Courtworks of Brandon, Ms. finished resurfacing the courts.

“They did a really good job,” McIntyre said. “The courts needed to be resurfaced.”

The courts were also relined for singles and doubles tennis by the crew. Lines for pickleball were also laid.

Pickleball is a paddleball sport similar to a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, with 26-40 round holes, over a net.

The sport shares features of other racquet sports: the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis, with several modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid 1960s as a children’s backyard game.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country,” McIntrye said.

In the near future, an eight foot by 12 foot backboard for practicing will be installed at Davis Park Tennis Courts. Repairs to fence gates will also be performed, McIntyre said.

“Phillip Robinson (Town of Winnsboro) along with his crew have done a great job,” McIntyre said. “They will be repairing the gates.”

Davis Park Tennis Courts are a popular area in Winnsboro with an active women’s league, Franklin Parish High School and Franklin Academy tennis teams practicing along with a steady stream of those who love the sport.

“I’m just excited and proud of our community for all of the improvements,” McIntyre said. “This was a team effort.”
