Deep South PRCA Rodeo canceled for this year, back in 2021

The PRCA Deep South Rodeo was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a first for the longtime, popular event.

This year’s event would have marked the 62nd event and was scheduled for May 30 through June 1. The decision came with organizers concerned for the public’s safety.

“We regret to inform everyone that due to restrictions and COVID-19, we are forced to cancel this year’s Deep South PRCA rodeo,” event organizers reported on a social media post. “It was a hard decision that we are forced to make, but we are committed to having a fun, safe and entertaining environment.”

Organizers assured fans the rodeo would come back to entertain crowds at a future date.

“The decision does not come lightly as it affects fans, contestants and contract personnel and their livelihoods,” organizers said. “Again, we thank everyone for their help and contributions to the ProRodeo. This is a first. Thanks again, Deep South ProRodeo. We look forward to coming back bigger and better in 2021.”

Last year, the rodeo had another first. The date was changed after many years to a May event. In the past, the rodeo was held the first week in August, but with farming trends changing so did the date for the rodeo.

As Franklin Parish corn acreage increased and cotton acreage decreased the need for a new date surfaced. In the beginning, the rodeo was scheduled as to not interrupt cotton harvest season.

The area-favorite event also features a kid’s rodeo usually held the weekend before the main rodeo. Contestants participate in muttin’ bustin’, bareback riding and goat untying.

The Winnsboro rodeo is one of 650 sanctioned PRCA events in the United States and Canada. PRCA boasts the largest and oldest rodeo-sanctioning body in the world with a membership of 4,727 cowboys and 1,195 contract personnel.
