FA wins Prairie View Invitational tournament

The Franklin Academy Lady Cougars softball team approved their overall record to 7-2 with a tournament championship at Prairie View Invitational last weekend.

The ladies started their championship quest with a 5-1 victory over Claiborne Academy in the tournament’s first round.

FA used a big four-run second inning to push past Claiborne. The opposing team’s only run came in the third.

Avaree McCain toed the rubber for FA, going three innings for a complete game and striking out six.

In the second game of the day, FA handled Union Christian Academy, 7-2.

FA put up three runs in the first inning while Union Christian held the contest tight scoring two of their own. But, the Lady Cougars eventually pulled away scoring one run in the second and three insurance runs in the third.

FA out hit Union 5 to 3 in the contest.

McCain put in two more innings in the second game for the Lady Cougars while Shelby Dickerson pitched one inning of relief.

McCain recorded five more strike outs, making a total of 11 for the day while Dickerson struck out one Union player.

Union Christian would have to face a dominate FA the next day and receive the same result with a 4-0 victory for the Lady Cougars.

Anne Elise Sartin pitched a gem for FA. Sartin threw four innings, striking out nine players.

FA’s offensive game was steady as they scored one run in the first and second and put two on the board in the third. For the game, FA totaled nine hits while limiting Union to just one hit.

The Lady Cougars continued their winning ways in the championship game as they blasted Glenbrook, 5-1.

Glenbrook crossed home first in the initial inning but it was all FA for the rest of the contest. FA scored three runs in the second and two insurance runs in the third inning.

For the game, FA outhit Glenbrook, 8-3.

Sartin pitched a complete three-inning game for FA to claim the win and the championship.

The Lady Cougars are scheduled to play an away game at Wilkinson County Christian School at Woodville, Ms, Aug. 13 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
