Franklin Parish boys coach Terry Martin Jr., can only describe the Patriots’ Nov. 19 game against Richwood in one word.

Martin was facing a Richwood team led by long-time Ram head coach Terry Martin Sr., Terry’s father.

“I would look down there and see him and that’s the only way I can describe it — weird,” Martin said. “But once the game got going I was concentrating on what we needed to be doing.”

The Patriots fell to Richwood 70-66.

“I knew it would be a good game,” Martin said. “We’re still learning.”

Martin was named men’s basketball coach at Franklin Parish before the school year, coming over from Family Community Christian School in Winnsboro. Martin replaces Lonnie Cooper, who accepted the Carroll High coaching job.

“The kids played really well,” Martin said. “I just want them to continue playing hard and get better each game. We are growing a bit every game. I am still learning them and they are learning me. But it’s coming along and I expect by mid-season we will be playing really well.”

Franklin Parish High School Girls

Franklin Parish girls fell to Ferriday 60-51.

Tierra Spurs led Ferriday with 24 points, while Shakayla Miller added 18.

Franklin Parish was led by Zennera McCarthy with 16 points, while Laki Crockett added 11.

“We’re coming around slowly but surely,” said Ferriday girls coach Lisa Abron. “Our defense was pretty awesome. We came out applying a lot of pressure. There were a few times we lost focus. You can’t get relaxed against a team like that.”

The Lady Patriots fell to Richwood 71-68.
