Lady Cougars battle PVA Spartans for championship

Editor’s note: Franklin Academy Lady Cougars played a three-game playoff with Praire View Academy for the state championship. Monday’s  third game went beyond press time. The following is highlights of the first and second game.

Home runs by Natalie Roberts and Shelby Dickerson were not enough for the Franklin Academy Lady Cougar softball team in their second game against Prairie View Lady Spartan, as they loss 5-4.

Roberts hit her bomb in the bottom of fourth to put FA ahead 3-2. Macie Wall, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, came home because the the home run.

Dickerson’s shot came in the fifth and tied the score with PVA, 4-4.

The Lady Cougars struck first in the bottom of the first when Wall hit a single to get Anne Elisa Sartin home. Sartin hit a hard triple earlier in the inning.

PVA would score in the second inning and third innings to take the lead.

After Roberts home run in the fourth, the Lady Spartans would go ahead 4-3 in the fifth with a hard grounder up the middle.

But FA would come storming back in the fifth with Dickerson’s home run.

PVA struck in the seventh inning with a single that scored a runner making the score 5-4.

In the game played Oct. 7, FA beat PVA 9-5.

But things were not so easy in the first part of the game. The score was tied at three with FA batting in the top of the fifth with Sartin singled on a 1-1 count, scoring a run.

The Lady Cougars were boosted by Wall who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Wall singled in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings.

FA opened up the scoring in the second inning when Aydenn McCain doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.

The Lady Cougars notched three runs in the sixth inning. The big inning was thanks to singles by Taylor Biggs, Wall and Natalie Roberts.

Sartin was the winning pitcher for FA. Sartin went the distance for FA, allowing 12 hit and five runs while striking out three.

FA scattered 15 hits in the game.

Wall, McCain, Shelby Dickerson and Biggs all had multiple hits.
