The Franklin Academy Lady Cougars softball team clinched their district Sept. 5 in front of the home crowd by beating Prairie View 5-1.
The Lady Cougars are now 8-0 in district and 18-5 overall while second place Prairie View’s district record stands at 6-2. Prairie View’s two losses came at the hands of the Lady Cougars.
FA celebrated senior night by hosting Tensas Academy Tuesday night. On Thursday night, FA will host Tallulah Academy to finish their regular season.
Franklin Academy struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Shelby Dickerson tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by Ashlyn Rodgers.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third inning when Ally Roberts and Dickerson singled to start the inning. Roberts later scored on a throwing error, and Dickerson scored again on an RBI groundout by Rodgers to put the Lady Cougars up 3-0.
Prairie View managed to score one run in the top of the fourth inning to trim the Lady Cougar lead to two runs, but FA answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Natalie Roberts scored on an RBI triple by Macie Wall.
The Lady Cougars exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach highlighted by Anne Elise Sartin, Hallie Herron and Karlee Keene singles and a RBI double by Natalie Roberts. The Lady Cougars tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Sartin started at pitcher for Franklin Academy and pitched a complete game, allowing only one unearned run and striking out 11 Lady Spartans.
For the season Sartin has a record of 14-3 with a .901 ERA, 123 strikeouts and only 18 walks in 77 2/3 innings pitched.
In district play, she has an 8-0 record with a .350 ERA, 71 strikeouts and nine walks in 40 innings pitched.
The Lady Cougars will begin playoff action as the top seed in the South State tournament being hosted by Prairie View Academy at Sterlington Softball Complex Sept. 21.
South state is made up of the top four finishers from each district in the south half of their association. The top four teams from south state qualify for the state tournament the following weekend which will be in Magee, Miss.
Top two finishers at the state tournament will play a best of three series to determine the state champion.
A team effort
The Franklin Academy Lady Cougars had a superb regular season thanks to a team effort at the plate.
At press time, Ally Roberts, Ashlyn Rodgers, Shelby Dickerson and Anne Elise Sartin are batting .423, .411, .400 and .393 respectively to lead Franklin Academy.
Additionally, three other batters batting percentages are high. Hallie Herron has a .367. Karlee Keene is batting .362, and Madison Truelove is at .351 with two games left in the regular season.
