LSU Baseball and Softball No. 1 in the Country

For the first time in program history, the LSU softball team is the No. 1 team in the nation as announced by the NFCA and USA Softball in the release of the weekly polls on Tuesday morning.

In addition to the LSU softball team's success, the LSU Tigers baseball squad is currently ranked as the country's number one team in the latest national poll by Baseball America.

Coming off of a weekend where LSU took two of three from then-No. 1 Florida in Gainesville, the Tigers jumped up two spots in the NFCA poll and one spot in the USA Softball one, marking the first time ever since the program was started in 1979 and restarted in 1997 that an LSU squad has been ranked No. 1 in either, much less both polls at the same time.

“There have been so many great players in this program’s history who have truly helped in building LSU softball and paving the way for this ranking and the success of this year’s team,” head coach Beth Torina said. “We have a special group of young women that truly understand the team concept and have worked hard to accomplish everything they have done so far this season. We are honored by the respect we have been shown for our accomplishments to this point; however, we have a clear understanding that there is still a long way to go in the 2015 season.”

LSU matched its highest ranking ever in the NFCA poll last week, sitting in a tie for third with Michigan. On Tuesday, the Tigers received 23 of a possible 32 first-place votes for 787 total points to take the top spot. Oregon was second with six first-place votes and 756 total points to remain in second place, while Florida moved to third place.

The Tigers went into last week also matching its highest placing in the USA Softball/ poll by being second for the third time in team history, only to best that mark this week by taking the top spot earning 19 of a possible 20 first-place votes for 499 total points. Florida earned the other vote and sits in second place with 481 points. Oregon remains in third place with 455 points.

LSU returns to the field on Tuesday night, hosting the Nicholls State University Colonels at 6 p.m. at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.
