“September Morning, we danced until the morning became a brand new day”… I love Neil Diamond and love that song!

“Home is where the heart is… Monroe is where her heart remains….” JEAN STRAUSS MINTZ flew in for a few days to visit and catch up with old friends. Her children CAROLYN KAPLAN, SALLY MANN & MELINDA MINTZ honored her at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club with a marvelous southern lunch this last Thursday. It was so much fun seeing Jean and so many old friends. There was lots of laughter and fun stories being told; a good time was had by all. I can’t remember when I have enjoyed a more enjoyable time. Happy memories last forever!
What a sad loss for North Louisiana but wonderful happy travels, retirement, new ventures and being close to their children in northern Illinois … all the best to MARILYN & DR. RON KOEPKE. BARBARA & DR. LOWERY THOMPSON honored the Koepkes with a wonderful going away party in their lovely home on Eason Place. “Always together…never apart, maybe in distance but never in heart!”
Senator John McCain’s funeral this last Saturday was something. I loved Joe Lieberman’s eulogy. It was from the heart, you felt like you knew him and would have loved to have been his friend. One of his sons read the most perfect, powerful military poem of greatness. A profound reading! Meghan McCain, go back to your seat! Your father would have been very disappointed in you, if all we heard about him and knew of his kindnesses to his fellow man, you disrespected your father and embarrassed your family and made lots of people uncomfortable. He would not have been proud of you. That is just one old girl’s opinion!
Our late summer garden is amazing … and nature is something to behold. Mike planted six Cushaw seeds around our big sugar kettle in the front yard, but only one made it. With this one little seed, 20 foot runners and a span of 20 to 30 feet, we have harvested 18 spectacular, large, green & white striped giants, with 15 more on the way. Eggplant for the world! Peppers, bells red, green, yellow, striped red, green & yellow, hot bananas of every color, jalapeños of every size.
Years ago, one of Mike’s old patients gave him a big old ugly looking dry Okra pod. Told him to save until next late spring, split open, soak the seeds, sit back and get ready for the best most beautiful okra ever. The flowers are just magnificent. We pick maybe 22 pods a day. I have seen recipes for stuffed fried Zucchini Squash blossoms. I am tempted to try this with my Cushaw blooms and the Okra blooms. I bet it would be good! I promise I could open a table at Buonarroti Holyfield’s market on Saturday, off Tower Drive. All my bounty of gifts from the Gods.
That reminds me of extremely wealthy people — the ones that are the happiest give their wealth away as fast as they can, like the Rockefellers, Margie Merryweather Post and so on…
I feel like Mammy in “Gone With The Wind.” It just not right, it just not right. … Labor Day is just not Labor Day without hunting doves. It is just not right! No one does it better than JEAN & SHERMAN SHAW. Guests and family from Coushatta way down to Thibodeaux … JANE & DR. GUY ZERINGUE. Sharp shooting, KAY & HUGH McDONALD, DR. BONITA & KENNY DYESS (Kenny fries the very best fresh fish, ever and he is just a nice guy), JULIE & DR. BEN STAGE, LINDA SILMON, LISA & JUNOT DIXON, DONNIE RAY & DON McENERY and many more… After an exciting, fun, safe, trip, cleaning our limits of birds, and telling funny stories it was on to the next happening: a seated dinner for 60 at the fabulous river home of Jean & Sherman. From fresh shrimp to lump crabmeat on to cooked to perfection, beef tenderloin, the very best Cub Potatoes Au Gratin, amazing green salad with toasted pecans, ending with Italian Cream Cake and Chocolate Sheet Cake with the yummy fudge icing. It was just all so good! Lots of happy guests!
We always pick our little birds, all you that are breasting them, you are killing to many! What is that old saying? “To each his own, said the old lady when she kissed the cow!” Stuff each bird with a good slice of hot pepper, wrap each bird in ½ strip of good bacon that you have coked halfway. Secure with a tooth pick, marinate in your favorite dressing, cook on a hot grill about 10 to 12 minutes. Do not overcook, you want them pink in the middle. Sprinkle with a little salt and finely chopped parsley. Talk about a beautiful presentation and delicious! Serve with Jalapeño Cheese Grits, Fresh Green Beans, hot biscuits and homemade Mayhaw Jelly.
I cannot fix enough of this my grandchildren eat it like their favorite candy….
Fresh picked Okra, about the size of your middle finger. Trim the top, cover with water and cook until just barely, maybe 3 to 5 minutes… drain and pour your favorite French Dressing over. Chill. You can add fresh cherry tomatoes and purple onions. This is from my old friend KAYDELL JACKSON, better known as Queenie!
Enjoy all these breeze early mornings, fall on the way kind of day! I always look forward to the next time!
