Behind Tylor Ongwae's 26 points, the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) Warhawks (22-12, 14-6) withstood a second half rally before regrouping to claim a 71-67 victory over the Eastern Michigan Eagles (21-14, 8-10) in the opening round of the College at ULM's Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Wednesday, March 18.
After Majok Deng made a free throw to give the Warhawks a 54-38 lead with 12:55 remaining in the game, Eastern Michigan would score 19 unanswered points to give the Eagles a brief 57-54 advantage.
The Warhawks were able to hit several key free throws accompanied by Ongwae two three pointers to regain the lead for good and to pull out the victory.
Jamall Samuel (15 points) and Majok Deng (14 points) were key contributors to the Warhawks' offensive success as both players hit double figures in scoring.
Eastern Michigan was led by Lee Raven, who scored 17 points, while Tim Bond added 13 points and Trent Perry chipped in 10 points in the loss.
ULM dominated the boards out rebounding Eastern Michigan 40 to 27 in the game. Over 3,000 ULM fans attended the first round game of the CIB tournament at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
